How to write a Russian address

It’s time to learn how to address a letter that’s headed to Russia. Pick up a samovar and get cozy. It’s time to dig into Russian address formats and examples. Writing a letter to your clients, friends, and family in Russia couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is look at Russian address examples here and try our suite of address validation tools for Russia’s address formats below. Just enter an address, and we'll format, standardize, and validate it faster than you can say “Vodka.”

Transliterating Cyrillic addresses to English characters

Before we get started, here’s a note on transliteration: Address transliteration is the process of converting address characters in one alphabet (in this case Cyrillic characters) to another (English or Latin characters) while still preserving the intended tone and representation of the words. In other words, we’re using Latin characters to represent the phonetics of Cryillic script. It’s important to understand that transliteration isn’t the same as translation. (That’s why translating tools don’t always get the message right). Transliteration is a mechanism that we use to bridge language barriers while maintaining mailability and accuracy to the phonics of those words, and this is one of the countries where Smarty offers transliteration services.

Now, let's get into the basics of Russia’s address format. Russian address formatting for shipping or mailing addresses should be written as follows:

  1. Addressee line - The recipient's full name, using appropriate titles.
  2. Postal code - The postal code gets its own, special line right at the top!
  3. Administrative area - The administrative area also gets a special line dedicated to it. Neat.
  4. Street name and building or house number - This line should include the street name and building number without any separating commas or punctuation.
  5. Building - The building also gets its own line. YAY.
  6. Country - Write "RUS" in all caps on the last line. Ta-da! You’re done.
