How to write a Thai address

"Sawasdee" my friend! Are you wondering how to address a letter to Thailand? It's easier than you'd think. While the official language of Thailand is Thai, you can still easily address a letter to any Thailand address without being an expert in Thai. Some might say it’s easier to write a letter to Thailand than it is to make pad Thai. We'll provide some Thailand address examples for you to look at and get familiar with.

Try our suite of address validation tools for addresses in Thailand. Simply enter a Thai address, and we'll format, standardize, and validate it faster than you can say “sabai sabai.”

Transliterating Thai addresses to English characters

Before we get started, here’s a note on transliteration: Address transliteration is the process of converting address characters in one alphabet (in this case, Thai characters) to another (English or Latin characters) while still preserving the intended tone and representation of the words. In other words, we’re using Latin characters to represent the phonetics of Thai words. It’s important to understand that transliteration isn’t the same as translation. (That’s why translating tools don’t always get the message right). Transliteration is a mechanism that we use to bridge language barriers while maintaining mailability and accuracy to the phonics of those words, and this is one of the countries where Smarty offers transliteration services.

Now, let's get into the basic structuring for Thailand's address format:

  1. Addressee line - The recipient's full name, using appropriate titles for the region.
  2. Building number and street - List one after the other without any separating punctuation.
  3. Local area - This may be the small town, village name, or part of a city the address is in.
  4. Municipality - The district the address is in.
  5. City - The city the address is in.
  6. Postal code - List the postal code on its own line.
  7. Country - This is often shortened to THA.
