This year, Smarty rolled out game-changing products, delivered customer-requested features, and doubled down on innovation to make access to address data faster, easier, and more reliable than ever.

Here are some of our 2024 highlights for providing addresses on easy mode.

New products

This year, we launched new products that solve some of your biggest challenges and unlock new possibilities:

  • US GeoReference:
Need census tract and block data? We’ve got you covered. US GeoReference helps you comply with governmental regulations while delivering demographic insights that power better decision-making. Whether optimizing insurance risk models or understanding your customer base, this product has your back.
  • US Secondary Address Data:
Using the only API on the market with US Secondary Address Data, get granular with address data by accessing secondary address details like apartment, suite, or building numbers. Need to know how many units are at a given address? Done. Precision is now a commodity you can count on.

New features: Because you asked and because we like you

No one knows better what you need than you. Here’s a list of some of the awesome new features your feedback helped us roll out:

  • Microsoft Excel Add-In:
Calling all spreadsheet aficionados! Many of our customers like to process addresses in bulk. And, they often have lists of addresses already in spreadsheets that they’d like to verify. Voila, we made you a Microsoft Excel Add-In. Validate addresses directly in Excel with ease. No coding required—just pure efficiency.
  • US Master Address List by county:
A large portion of our customers need a smaller section of our US Master Address List. Now, more address data is available in the size you need. You can purchase our US Master Address List by county, state, or nationwide. Choose what makes the most sense for you.
  • SmartyKey® in  US Address Verification, US Property Data, US Property Data: Financial, and US Secondary Address Data:
We got so much hype from you about SmartyKey® being in some of our products that we decided to spread the love around. SmartyKey, our persistent unique identifier (PUID), is now part of US Address Verification, US Property Data, US Property Data: Financial, and US Secondary Address Data, making connecting multiple data sources to an address easier than ever. SmartyKey unlocks new opportunities for creating and maintaining a clean master database.
    • SmartyKeyEXT (US Master Address List): Every address in our US Master Address List now comes with a unique identifier, no matter the type—aliases, LACSLink addresses, and more. Consistency has never looked so good. This new field allows you to link diverse data sets to individual addresses.
  • US Enrichment Tool: Your Admin Dashboard just leveled up. With our Address Enrichment Tool, you can query US principal and financial property data sets using an address or SmartyKey.
  • Single Sign-On (Beta):
Tired of juggling passwords? Us too. Streamline your account management with secure, seamless SSO (thanks, product team!) PSST! We’re always looking for feedback from our users! Contact our support team if you’re interested in possibly joining our beta program.

Technical innovations

Smarty is laser-focused on continually innovating around address data. It’s how we deliver the best solutions on the market, year after year. Here are a few under-the-hood improvements we made to supercharge your experience:

  • Machine learning & AI:
By optimizing our sophisticated matching algorithm with machine learning, we can better identify and remove false positives from our database using address verification. It was awesome before. Now it’s uber awesome. Cleaner data = better decisions.
  • Freeform partial match:
When entering addresses into a freeform field, we’ll let you know what specific elements matched (and what didn’t). For example, if the city entered doesn’t match one in our database, we’ll flag it. It’s clarity, redefined.
  • Geographic county:
USPS data doesn’t always cut it. Now, we return the physical geographic county of an address, not just the county of the post office.
  • Address search for enrichment API:
Submit an address and receive data from our enrichment datasets. You can now use the enrichment API with a street address without knowing the SmartyKey. It’s one API to rule them all.

Why are we so obsessed with you? We really, really like you

Every new product, feature, and innovation we’ve rolled out this year has one goal: to absorb the complexity of address data so you can get back to doing what you do best.

Whether it’s staying compliant, optimizing processes, seeing a higher ROI, or improving your customer data to make more informed business decisions, we’re here to help you succeed.

At Smarty, we know that the secret sauce is in the details. That’s why we obsess over getting your address data right every time. It’s not just about validation, geocoding, property data, or autocomplete; it’s about empowering your organizations to improve operations, hone marketing, and make killer decisions with smarter, more accurate address data.

Where we’ve been and what’s to come for 2025

Already, we’ve been hard at work to support your goals:

~280 billion addresses verified by our customers in 2024

~99.99% of requests served in less than 4 milliseconds

~60,000+ products purchased

100% uptime this year = No breakdowns for you or your crew

Phew!

This year has been exciting, and we’re not slowing down. In fact, we’re just ramping up!

Our teams are already dreaming up the next wave of innovations to make address data even more actionable, precise, and, well, Smarty.

Here’s a sneak peek at one of many things in the hopper: We’re already working on giving you more control over how you use Smarty (limit by key and alias functions) and improving your notifications capabilities.

We’re honored you chose us as your address data partner. Thanks for sharing your ideas and helping us make address data the best it can be.

Here’s to what we create together next year! 🥂

Patient form optimization: The $17.4 million problem
Arrow Icon
Let's start with a number that should make every hospital administrator do a double take: $17. 4 million. That’s how much the average hospital loses annually—just from denied claims due to patient misidentification. This isn’t from equipment costs, not from staffing shortages, and not even from insurance negotiations—just from keeping bad patient data. Surely, our forms aren’t that bad. (Yes, they are, and stop calling me Shirley. )But here’s the reality: According to the 2016 Ponemon Misidentification Report, 30% of hospital claims get denied, and over a third of those denials are caused by inaccurate or incomplete patient information.
The GPS adventures of a distracted developer

My name is Jeffrey Duncan, and at the pestering of Smarty’s editor, I’m writing a blog about the many adventures I’ve had in life and how address data has played a big part in them. I met my wife about eight years ago on a dating website. At the time, I lived in Provo, Utah, while she lived in Palmwoods, Australia, on the east coast of Queensland. On this dating app, I entered the area where I was interested in finding someone, about a 25-mile radius of Provo, Utah. I had no intention of leaving the valley, definitely not the state, and certainly not the country.
Improving address data quality in healthcare

Healthcare is experiencing a dramatic shift in how patient information is stored and managed. Electronic medical records (EMRs) and electronic health records (EHRs) have become the new standard, driven by two powerful forces: everyone has mobile devices and the increase in the human population. A growing problem with clean address data in EMRs and EHRsWhile EMRs and EHRs offer amazing accessibility and storage capabilities (way better than a filing cabinet), they've also exposed a critical weakness in many healthcare organizations: address data quality.
